US under-18 hockey team to wear Vader sweaters

NESN (New England Sports Network) reports that the US national under-18 boys hockey team will be wearing these Darth Vader sweaters in their tilt against the Waterloo Black Hawks on 18 January in Ann Arbor, Michigan in yet another Star Wars/sports team tie-in. Says NESN:

For one game in January, the U.S National U-18 Team will become the Galactic Empire.

The team, which plays in the USHL as part of the National Team Development Program, will be hosting its third annual Star Wars Night when the Waterloo Black Hawks visit the Ann Arbor Ice Cube on Jan. 18.

“This is the third straight season we’ve held this fantastic promotion,” Scott Monaghan, senior director of operations with the NTDP, said in a press release. “Each year this night has grown and it’s now one of the most popular games on the schedule.”

The event will feature a variety of promotions based on George Lucas‘ iconic films, but the centerpiece will be the team’s jerseys, which will feature the Star Wars logo and a oversized, wraparound image of a menacing Darth Vader. The jerseys will then be auctioned after the game, with all proceeds benefiting the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich.

High-level junior leagues like the USHL usually remain above the absurd gimmicks that minor league hockey is known for, but promotions like this show that these teams still know how to have some fun.

Personally I prefer the Vader sweaters worn by my buddy Dave's team.

Dark Side hockey sweaters

My friend (and A Long Time Ago proofreader) Dave (aka Darth Daver) plays hockey in Vancouver with a team called Dark Side. Check out their new kit.

I especially like the shoulder flashes. I'm told even their socks have the Vader image on them, which may be a step too far...

Dark Side are 6-2-1 so far this season but have just come off a 7-1 drubbing by the Warriors. Next game in tonight at 9:45 at Hillcrest rink, in case you want to see this gear in person.

Bryzgalov goalie mask gets the Special Edition treatment

USA Today Sports photos, before on the right, after on the left

SB Nation reports that Lucasfilm officials intervened to correct Ilyz Bryzgalov's Star-Wars-themed goalie mask. As previously noted, the Philadelphia Flyers' goalie was sporting a new mask last week featuring Yoda wielding a reddish lightsaber. (It turns out the lightsaber was orange, so as to match the Flyers' colours.)

Lucasfilm was not, it seems, happy about this bit of artistic licence, and intervened to request/demand that the mask receive the notorious Lucasfilm Special Edition treatment. From SB Nation:

According to a report by Enrico Campitelli of the 700 Level, Lucasfilm contacted the Flyers and informed them that they wanted the color of Yoda and the saber color to be changed. Franny Drummond, the artist who designed the mask, told Campitelli that Bryzgalov might not have been permitted to wear the mask if those changes had not been made, via the 700 Level:

"We didn't realize we'd be offending anyone," Drummond told me this morning. "Yoda's Lightsaber was actually an orange-ish color before we changed it. We were going for a hint of the Flyers' colors in Yoda as well. There were no bad intentions. It was just a matching thing."

Bryzgalov wore the mask as it was originally designed in one game before Drummond made the alterations to Yoda's illustration.

The photo above (from USA Today via The 700 Level) shows the Lucasfilm-imposed deprovement. Honestly Lucasfilm, if Yoda lived for 900 years, is there really no possibility that he ever once weilded an orange lightsaber?

Ilya Bryzgalov's new Star Wars goalie mask

As you can see, Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov has a new goalie mask. The other side features Yoda weilding a red--yes, red--lightsaber.

The Score: Ilya Bryzgalov, full-grown adult, has a new (and sorta wrong) Star Wars goalie mask

Montreal Canadiens stars in Star Wars spoof

Star Wars hockey sweater

Yahoo! Sports' Puck Daddy blog reports on a hockey team in Port Huron, Michigan wearing gorgeous Chewbacca-themed hockey sweaters:

The IHL Port Huron Icehawks had annual "Star Wars" nights, wearing sweaters themed to Darth Maul and Boba Fett. On Saturday, the NAHL Port Huron Fighting Falcons hold their second annual Star Wars Night at McMorran Arena against Imperial forces the Jamestown Ironmen.

And they'll be wearing Chewbacca hockey jerseys. Which is awesome.
