ThisSortOfThing's 2013 Star Wars holiday gift guide

Star Wars Inc. reliably churns out vast amounts of merch and noise to distract us all from anything important that may be going on in the world. Much of it is crap, but there are gems, especially (but not exclusively) items produced by people without a Lucasfilm licence. (It must be said that Lucasfilm, and now Disney, are admirably tolerant of independent makers.)

So here's my latest list of likeable starwarsia, well in time for the holidays.

Zeon Star Wars watches

That's a goodlukeing watch. US$199 from ThinkGeek.

That's What I'm Tarkin About t-shirt

I own this and wear it frequently. Shouldn't you? US$12 from CoastCityShirts on Etsy.

William Shakespeare's Star Wars

I've praised it before. US$12 or so (hardcover) on Amazon. Coming soon: The Empire Striketh Back and the Jedi Doth Return.

Star Wars skirts from GoFollowRabbits

For the Star Wars lady in your life (who may be you). Also available in R2-D2, Vader, Bounty Hunter and (if you'll forgive a brief departure from the Star Wars universe) this awesome man on the moon print. US$55 from GoFollowRabbits on Etsy.

Kenner action figures iPhone case

Awfully hard not to like this. US$16.99 from MichaelEllisCases on Etsy.

A Long Time Ago: Growing up with and out of Star Wars

"a thoughtful, funny, and beautifully written story...scathingly hilarious and bang on." -- Cory Doctorow on Boing Boing

Did you really think I wasn't going to plug my book? What do you think this blog is for? US$10.79 (paperback), US$2.87 (Kindle) on Amazon.

Oh and by the way

I still want these cufflinks. I put them in last year's gift guide but didn't get them.

2012 Star Wars holiday gift guide

Looking for gifts for the old-time Star Wars fan in your life? Here are a few tips.

Chewbacca the Red-Nosed Reindeer Christmas cards

All of the other Wookies used to laugh and call him names.

Etsy: Star Wars Chewbacca the Red Nosed Reindeer 10 PACK

"Use the Force" cufflinks

Gorgeous and inexpensive (for cufflinks). Someone tell my wife... US$60.

Cufflinks.com: "Use the Force" Comic Cufflinks

Millenium Falcon bottle opener

It's enough to make you wish bottle caps weren't all twist-off these days. US$19.99.

ThinkGeek: Star Wars Millenium Falcon Bottle Opener

Vintage Star Wars Cardback Notebooks

Star Wars superfan Kevin Gawthrope (of KG's Vintage Star Wars Corner) makes these wonderful things.

Etsy: Recycled Vintage Star Wars Notebooks

Spaceballs 25th Anniversary Blu-Ray Edition

From the Amazon write-up: "Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his half-man/half-dog sidekick (John Candy) race against time to free a princess (Daphne Zuniga) from the evil clutches of Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis). Along the way, they meet the wise Yogurt (Mel Brooks), who teaches them the mystical power of "the Schwartz" in order to bring peace - and merchandising rights - to the galaxy!". US$8.

It never gets old.

Amazon.com: Spaceballs (25th anniversary edition)

Don't Hassle the Moff t-shirt

I'm not a big funny t-shirt guy. But I'd make an exception for this. US$20.

BS Design Store: Don't Hassle the Moff

Why Is Dad So Mad? single

OK so a digital single is a funny sort of gift to give, and for $1 it might seem a bit cheap. But for that hard-to-buy-for Star Wars fan of a certain age, it's right on target. US$1.

SoundCloud: Why Is Dad So Mad? (single)

Princess Leia infant onesie

Aww. It's so cute I'm going to ignore the mangling of Princess Leia's name on the Etsy page. US$24.

Etsy: Sewing Wars: Princess Layer Infant Bodysuit

A Long Time Ago: Growing Up With And Out Of Star Wars

Don't take it from me. Ask Wired.com:

At the end of it all, they are just movies. But for people like you and me, they meant a lot more; each film was a meaningful mile marker on our childhoods. A Long Time Ago captures those memories and transports you back to the living room floor, when the shag carpet was the Dagobah swamp and the gap between the couch cushions was the Death Star trash compactor. These are times worth revisiting and this memoir helps to bridge the gap. If you’d like to revisit a galaxy far, far away, give A Long Time Ago a look. As Van Ert’s daughter says, “It’s a good story, uh?”

US$11.99 (paperback), 4.99 (eBook)
