Star Wars at the Coronet, 1977
Peter Hartlaub of SFGate has put together a terrific collection of black and white photographs of San Francisco's Coronet cinema in May 1977 as it showed Star Wars for the first time. From the article:
It must have been like a dream, seeing “Star Wars” at the Coronet Theatre in San Francisco on opening weekend.
Most of the hype was word of mouth — Chronicle archives show that the local press before the release was minimal. The studio appeared to be so lacking in confidence that “Star Wars” opened on just 37 theaters nationwide, including the Coronet and the Century 22 in San Jose.
But record-breaking crowds started lining up on opening night, Wednesday May 25, and that was just the beginning of the madness. After hype surrounding the film became too big to ignore, the newspaper sent a photographer to the theater on Saturday, May 28.
